Remote Learning Tools: Lecture

In online teaching, lectures can either be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous lectures are those that take place live with students "tuning-in," while asynchronous lectures are pre-recorded for students to view at a later time.

Asynchronous lectures allow for video editing and can be saved and published to a site like YouTube. The YouTube link that is created for your video can then be shared with students on Sapphire. Any iPad that is updated to iOS version 11 or later has the ability to record the screen and capture the audio. So you could record a presentation from your iPad and then upload that video to YouTube. One trick to remember is that for screen recordings, the microphone is turned off by default. You need to tap and hold the screen record button to enable the microphone.

  • This video will guide you through screen recording on an iPad
  • This video will explain how to create a YouTube channel and upload videos that you can share with your students.

Synchronous lectures provide students the opportunity to ask questions while their teacher is hosting the meeting. A tool like Google Hangouts/Meet gives the meeting's host the option to mute all attendees, but students could still post questions in the comments section to be addressed later.

  • This video will show you how to set up and use Google Meet with your students to host a live lecture. It will also show you how to pre-schedule a session using Google Calendar. If using Google Calendar, the link that is created must be used by both the teacher and the students to join the same meeting.
  • This video will show you how to set up and use Zoom with your students to host a live lecture. The video mentions a 40-minute maximum time limit for the free version, but that has been waived due to the recent school closures. Many of the features are similar to Google Meet, but you have the ability to record and save the video within the Zoom application. You can use your school email account to create an account with Zoom.
