Online Assessment: Exit Tickets

Exit tickets traditionally help you assess if students "caught what you taught" and plan for the next lesson. You can use this technique to show you what students are thinking and what they have learned at the end of a lesson.

In the traditional classroom we do this at the end of the period, just before the students transition to their next class. There are some tools, however, that will let you accomplish this digitally.

  • Google Forms - Teachers can set up exit tickets with varying question types and share the form with students using a shareable link or via email. The program also allows you to include images and video in the question. All responses will populate in a spreadsheet and you will be able to review each student's response. Make sure to collect email addresses so you know who is responding! This YouTube video will guide you through the process of setting up a Google Form as an exit ticket.
  • Mentimeter - Teachers can interact with their students and gather real-time input using live polls, multiple choice questions, and open answer Q&A. Students join and respond using a code that their teacher displays. This YouTube video will give you an overview of Mentimeter.
  • Kahoot! - Although Kahoot is more of a learning game than an exit ticket, it can be used to assess student learning. Teachers can create a Kahoot review game based on the week's content and can play it live during a Zoom session by sharing the screen and join code as you would in your classroom. Students can join on their iPad or computer. If you're unfamiliar with Kahoot, this short YouTube video will help guide you through the process.
