Online quizzes can be two things: either very dynamic or they can be dull. In the online environment, dynamic and thoughtful assessment is a must. If you can make your more standardized assessments dynamic and memorable, you will have more success in student learning.
Before we begin, let's explore the type of questions that you can usually include in your LMS. You can include true/false, multiple choice, short and long answers. Luckily for instructors, there are some very simple steps you can take to ensure your assessments are thought-provoking, dynamic and digestible in the online environment.
First, break up assessments. You are better to have multiple short quizzes than one or two long ones.
Second, realize there are limitations to automated quiz types. These question types may not gauge learners deep understanding of the topic. Try to ask questions that encourage exploration rather than memorization if possible. Dynamic questions can show whether learning is actually taking place.
Finally, incorporate media, this can make a quiz more engaging and more memorable for the leaner.
Keep in mind that you don't want to create quizzes for the sake of creating quizzes. Any assessment should help you figure out whether learners are learning what they should be. Quizzes should be a tool to assess whether learners are reaching your learning objectives.
Google Forms provides a relatively easy way to create a quiz and deploy it to your students electronically. The multiple choice questions can be automatically graded, and you can provide feedback for incorrect responses. This YouTube video provides a pretty thorough walk-through of creating a Google Form, including design aesthetics, settings, and question design.
